The Brookfield Stars Hockey Program has developed a rich tradition since its inception in 1991. The program has seen talented players progress into higher levels of competition, including junior leagues, NCAA college hockey, and even professional careers. Below is a timeline that highlights the evolution of the program, its coaches, and the players who have gone on to further their hockey careers.

1991-1995: Jeff Hiltz Era

Head Coach: Jeff Hiltz

  • The Brookfield Stars Hockey Program was founded in 1991 with Jeff Hiltz as the first head coach. Hiltz established the foundations for a strong high school hockey program, instilling discipline and fostering a competitive spirit in the team.
  • Notable Players:
  • Joe Jenke: A standout in these early years (All-Conference and All-State recognition), Joe Jenke progressed to higher levels of hockey, including playing for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL, Team Wisconsin and having a brief career in junior hockey, before dominating at the collegiate level in Rainy River (International Falls MN), and having a stint in the European Pro Leagues
  • Nick Glander: Another standout, Nick played for the Stars before moving on to play junior in the North American hockey league for the Soo St Marie program.

1995-1998: Oakie Brumm Era

Head Coach: Oakie Brumm

  • Oakie Brumm took over the coaching reins in 1995, continuing to build on the program’s early successes.
  • Under his leadership, the team achieved a significant milestone by reaching the state tournament's "Elite Eight" for the first time in its history. Brumm's coaching tenure with the Stars from 1995 to 1998 was marked by his commitment to building the program's success. He also became an influential figure in Wisconsin hockey, later becoming the owner and editor of The Wisconsin Hockey News.
  • His legacy in hockey coaching spans from local high school teams to international endeavors, and he remains a celebrated figure in both Michigan and Wisconsin hockey circles.
  • Notable Players:
  • Lee Jenke: Like his brother, Lee Jenke followed in his footsteps (All-Conference and All-State recognition), making his mark on the Brookfield Stars before progressing to play for Team Wisconsin. Before heading off to play at Rainy River (International Falls MN), MSOE (NCAA D3), later playing professionally for the Flint Generals, the Knoxville Ice Bears, before finishing his professional career with the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds
  • Mike Turcotte: Another key player during this time, Mike Turcotte developed into one of the team’s top performers. He later moved on to join and play with Lee Jenke at MSOE (NCAA D3)

1998-2000: Mike Sullivan Era

Head Coach: Mike Sullivan

  • During Mike Sullivan's tenure, the team continued to compete at a high level in Wisconsin high school hockey.
  • Notable Players:
  • Dan Stierman: Known for his leadership and strong offensive play,
  • Lief Bergquist: Lief Bergquist had a notable high school hockey career while playing for the Brookfield Stars. He earned an honorable mention on the 2004 All-State team, demonstrating his skill as a defenseman during his time with the Stars. His inclusion in the All-State selections highlights his contributions and performance on the ice​

2001-2006: Jason Woods Era

Head Coach: Jason Woods

  • The Jason Woods era saw the Brookfield Stars evolve into a more competitive team, with increasing numbers of players moving on to junior and college-level hockey.
  • Notable Players:
  • Matthew Shapiro: An All-Conference and All-State Player that helped guide the Stars during his playing time
  • AJ Sinner: An All-Conference & All-State Player during his time with the Stars
  • Joel Rechlicz: Even though his time with the Stars was short, Joel was a huge contirbutor to the success of the program during his time with the Stars. Joel went on to continue playing in Junior, the USHL, QMJHL, ECHL, AHL, and the NHL with the NY Islanders & Washington Capitals.

2007-2010: Al Mackenzie Era

Head Coach: Al Mackenzie

  • Al Mackenzie led the team during a period of growth, helping to develop future stars that would make a mark beyond high school hockey.
  • Notable Players:
  • AJ Sinner

2010-2016: Matt Shapiro & Steve Chapin Era

Head Coaches: Matt Shapiro (2010-2015) & Steve Chapin (2011-2015)

  • Matt Shapiro, a former Brookfield Stars player, returned to the program as a coach, instilling the values and experiences he gained from his own hockey career. Steve Chapin joined as a co-coach in 2011, leading the team to several successful seasons.
  • Notable Players:
  • Robbie Fosdick: Another standout, All-Conference and All-State Player, after the Brookfield Stars, he played for the Madison Capitols in the USHL from 2014 to 2017, accumulating 152 games with 3 goals and 14 assists over three seasons. He served as captain during his final season with the Capitols, recording 10 points that year.
  • Following his USHL career, Fosdick committed to Northern Michigan University, where he played NCAA Division I hockey starting in the 2017-2018 season. 
  • Matt Fosdick had an impressive high school career as an All-Conference, and all-state defenseman for the Brookfield Stars, where he helped the team make an improbable run to the Wisconsin state tournament. In a standout game against top-seeded Homestead, he scored two goals and added two assists, leading his team to a 7-2 victory. His performance continued in the sectional finals, where his contributions helped the Stars advance further in the playoffs. Fosdick’s strong play made him one of the key figures in Brookfield Stars hockey history

2016-Present: Greg Copeland Era

- Head Coach: Greg Copeland (2016-Present)

  • Under Greg’s leadership, the Brookfield Stars have continued their tradition of success, competing at a high level in Wisconsin high school hockey and developing players for the next level. Succeeding off the ice too, the Brookfield Stars won the Team Academic State Award in 2021. In 2023-2024 led Brookfield Stars to another milestone making it all the way to the State finals before losing in the championship game to Notre Dame.
